Are you a process or a product knitter?

From my understanding, a process knitter is one who enjoys the process of creating a finished piece more than actually finishing the piece; whereas a product knitter wants the finished product more than chocolate-covered, deep fried awesome. I read on a blog somewhere while researching this question (sorry, I don’t have the link) that if stranded on an island with a couple skein of yarn, the process knitter will knit something only to frog it and knit something else, while the project knitter will knit the project and wear it. I have to say that’s a load of crap right there. Were I stranded on a deserted island, you better believe that I will be knitting with vines, ape hair, Dahrma yarn, and anything els I can get my hands on.

Given the choice of one or the other, I’d have to say I was a project knitter. I damn well want something after putting the time in to create it. Not that I’m waisting my time by not finishing the project, but I want something tangible that I can look at that reminds me of what I learned and the random moments of knitting that piece. And, if I’m honest part of me does feel like it’s a waste of time and money not to finish most of the projects I start.

As I said given the choice of one or the other, I’m a project knitter, but I think it’s naive to say you can be only one. *Insert highlander joke here, I’ll wait* I’m definitely both a project and process knitter because as much as I want to finish my projects, I love making the project, picking the yarn, and learning new techniques as I go. So now, dear readers, it’s your turn. Are you a project or process knitter? Or both?

Yarn count update

I’ve been slowly going through my yarn stash and wow I have a lot of yarn. And looking at the photos so far, doesn’t it seem like it’s all the same color? I need to change that up.

After the first week of cataloging, I had 28 items in my stash with at least that much to go. I am now down to 26 with at least 28 to go!

Oh, maybe now is not the time to mention that I bought yarn from my LYS for the Husband’s scarf. Ugh. That purchase will bring me back to 28 items. At least it’s not 30?

I was sort of lying when I reported that I only bought 2 items for 3 projects at the yarn fest a few weeks back. I mean, I did by 2 items, but I didn’t have 3 projects. I had 2 projects and one of the yarns I bought was a gift for my MIL. This yarn to be precise.

It’s pretty, no? It’s soft, too. Alas, it is not mine.

While I cataloged my stash, I rediscovered some Lamb’s Pride in a silver/gray that was left over from my Felted Asymmetrical Fibonacci bag and decided it would make a perfect donation hat for people affected by the flooding, which it does.

I’m 99% done with the hat, but I need to decide if it’s too long or just right before I weave in ends. I had been toying with the idea of revamping the pattern for Marcie’s Hat and finally getting it up on Ravelry for a while. I LOVED the look of that hat, but it just didn’t work once I had made it. The hat grew with use and was simply not warm enough. So, pretty, but not as functional as I’d like. I’ve reworked the hat with the same style, but with the Lambs pride, double-stranding, and a different cast off. Hopefully it will work out better. If anyone wants to be a tester for the hat, let me know.

I need to get back to cataloging. It’s actually been sort of liberating to see what I have left. The biggest question is what to do with the odds and ends that I find. You know the yarn, it’s the leftover from a project and is not even half a skein but you just can’t seem to bring yourself to throw it out because you could use it someday in a project that uses all that random yarn! What do you do with your odds and ends?

Farm Fest

I live in a town surrounded by a lot of farms and one weekend every year is devoted to Farm Fest, where farms open their grounds up for visitors, demos, shopping frenzies, etc. I guess it’s a way to let us town folk know about our local farming treasures and to get people to these places and start spending money. Last year we went to a mosquito farm claiming it was a sheep farm and two apple orchards. This year we just went to the the apple orchards with friends.

The first orchard had a sign listing only two types of apples you can pick and neither were the type I like so we skipped apple-picking there. We did, however, go on a hayride. Not OP’s first hayride since she went on it last year, but the best one yet. She really seemed to liked it. I suspect part of it was being in a moving vehicle without a car seat. That’s how the crazy babies live it up.

OP also loved the cider donut machine. She didn’t get to have any donuts, but she loved yelling, “Here it comes!” when the donut made it’s way to the top of the conveyor and then fell to the next part.

The second apple orchard is where we picked apples. Honey crisps to be exact. She loved it, especially the part where she got to taste apples and ride on Daddy’s shoulders.

Sadly, OP fell asleep after picking apples so we hung out while our friends’ daughter rode a horse.

Too much apple picking, apparently.

We picked up some cider donuts, which OP did not get to try, and went home exhausted. It was a really nice day and I recommend if your area does similar to check it out. I want to try to make it back out sometime before the end of the season, but we’ll have to see how crazy life is.

Skeyah!

I finished knitting Skew. Unfortunately I knit the left sock, the second of the pair, on the wrong needle size. Sadly I didn’t realize this fact until I was almost done. Epic fail.

I tried the foot on after I turned the heel and it felt fine. Of course at the time, I didn’t realize I was using the wrong needle. It was only with one inch left I realized my mistake. Who knew a sock could make your ankle numb?

I see frogging in my future, but the sock will need to be put aside for a few weeks. I think I’ll work on a few other projects and try not to burn my Skew socks in the meantime. Gyahhh!
